Hi folks now that we've gotten stage 1 of the Facebook application up and running, we're ready to turn our attention to having an open API for Mixx. We have a lot of the work done already (had to for Facebook), but still need to work out some more things....
The list of what we could allow the API to do is huge, so in an attempt to prioritize, would love to hear from the Bowlers what types of things you would like the API to contain so you could build cool tools for other mixxers to use?

Because I am a geek, I will like to see support for OpenSocial, FOAF and XFN. I am not as big on OpenSocial, and I do not know how well it fits with social media and Mixx. I think you already have XFN or FOAF support, but not entirely sure.
Otherwise, I would love to be able to list submissions from specific mixx users. This fits very well into the social media aggregators and rss feeds. Not sure if I would have any other requirements yet, as I have not given it tons of thought.

It would be nice if we could vote ONCE in ONE group for a URL that is submitted to various groups so all groups see it as having that vote.

That somewhat distorts the purpose of groups though.

At the risk of sounding like a total dullard, could someone explain what an API is?

Best way to describe it to the non-tech (which would be me too, btw) is that it opens a special and secure tunnel for another website or piece of software to access the behind-the-scenes data that mixx has stored (things like how many votes are on a story, what tags are on a photo, what the most popular videos are right now, how many karma points a user has), and by doing so allows that other website or software to offer new ways to list or show that data. Following what Rob said in the above post, allow someone to create an iGoogle application, for example, that just showed you comments from your two favorite Mixx users. Right now, you don't have an easy way to see that data (without a lot of clicking), so the API would enable someone to build a shortcut to show that to you. Companies generally open their APIs so that people can start using the site in ways that we either haven't imagined or can't build in the current construct of the user interface. And, Mixx would never allow some things to go out to the API--like your email address you registered with, for example. Hope this helps.

I'd like it to contain a history of awards of each user. This would allow a "Mixx Awards History" app, and users can view their own and others as well. Yeah I know I've been wanting this for the longest time! lol

Well, I'm no programmer, and I wouldn't know what to do with an API if my life depended on it.
I know what an API is for, and I'm glad you're doing it. I just don't have any serious ideas as to what data (other than the obvious) would be relevant for those designing mixx applications.
All I know is, I can't wait for developers to get their hands on it, so we can start seeing some creative third-party apps as a result. Maybe a desktop client in Adobe AIR or a Firefox Toolbar. Those would rock.
That's all I have to say on the matter. Which, as it turns out, wasn't much of anything. -Honest Api

I would like Mixx to implement opensocial, google is behind it and you can bet that this is going to rule the net someday, so it is better to start with something with potential. Everything Google.

How about being able to see all who have voted for your submission, not just recent voters?

You just need to learn to check it obsessively like I do. Then it isn't a problem.
