How does Karma work?

There's a secret sauce to it, and I'm sure it's as protected as the recipes for Coca-Cola, and KFC.  I have my own theories on it; and was wondering how do YOU think it works?

Perhaps by sharing these ideas, we can help encourage new users in positive participation, and help them grow their karma, like a happy hippie growing weed in a legalized dream.

I once saw a post from brian about how he thought you received 3 points for a submission and 5 points for a comment, or something to that affect. I get a lot more points for submissions than I do for comments, which leads me to believe you get more points for things you do less often. I comment a whole lot more than I submit.

As far as I can tell this is the standard karma model

6 pts for  a submission
3 pts for a comment
1 pt for every 6-10 votes (up or down)

10 pts for getting a top ten.

I believe the badges give you 10 pts.

I believe you also get points for upvotes on your stories. Not sure if that
is the same model as your own votes. I have noticed my karma jump overnight
which is kinda cool.

I have not seen the direct relationship, but I am fairly sure you get something
if someone favorites your submission.

One thing I would say, is engage in conversation on submissions will help drive up your karma.  Don't just add an asinine comment just to get the 3 points.  If you can keep the conversation going and RELEVANT you'll increase your karma by at least 30 by adding 10 comments.

Not to mention by engaging in a RELEVANT conversation you'll possibly make a friend and get an extra vote or two on your own stuff.

That's about what I get. I don't remember where I got that other info . . . and I guess it wouldn't make sense to create a user-specialized algorithm.

I've noticed a glitch that I accidentally executed on two submissions of mine.

Using '-' and any number of '........' in a story title gave me free points.
On one story it gave me 1 point and on another it gave me 13.
I don't know how it works though...and I didn't do it on purpose.

I have a bad feeling about this..

Here's one of them...
