This one is more for the Mixx Guys, whenever they come around.

Down Votes

The current system works.  Don't change it or if  you don't don't change it much.  Adding reasons for down voting is going to suck in terms of additional work I have to do to down vote something.  I'm entitled to my opinion of why I down vote something.  I don't do it often and if I do, the reasons are very obvious.

In a recent post at Mixx, a user started whinning that his submission was down voted because it related to a certain topic.  They then accuse the down voters for voting down "immaturely".  Meanwhile, this user's track record for down votes is completely hypocritical.  They down voted quality articles, some of which, affect millions of people every day and then would leave asinine comments behind.

I IMPLORE Mixx to not change the down vote process.  Simple is best.  Thumbs up or Thumbs down.  If I have to provide a reason, make it optional.

Here here.  I would add also that the comment section allows discussion of a downvote.  Ultimately though, it's not really my business why someone chooses to down vote my submission.

I you take away down-votes or lessen a user's ability to do so, you might as well take away voting altogether, which would make mixx really boring.

I could care less either way.  I didn't mind having "reasons" for burying at Digg...  but I also like the system in practice at Mixx as it is right now.  Either way, I don't need to justify my up-votes or down-votes to anyone - period.

Hey Guys

Here's what we've seen coming in through the "report this" and the feedback mailbox. TONS of mail and reports of people who are getting in pissing matches because they have no insight into why someone has voted their content down. Its way more volume than we expected or can really handle.

We don't want to hide who votes things down--I think that gets you in more trouble.

We would love it if everyone commented on why they voted it down out of good ettiquette, but forcing someont to do that isn't the way to go either.

If you read my email to Bart, I stated that we're considering doing something, but need a way to present it in the UI that makes sense.

The experience that Kori and I have had is that a bit of education has been going a long way to settle down the "he's voting all my stuff down" emails and reports. We explain that most people consider self-submission spam. That the true way to help themselves, both from a getting popular and an SEO perspective is to submit a variety of good content, tag it well, make friends, don't category, group or tag spam.  Basically, the same stuff you guys talk about here in the mixxing bowl and on the mixxingbowl blog.

To be clear, we have a lot of stuff on our to-do list, and this one isn't highest priority, BUT that being said, I do favor doing something like an "overlay" that says something like "care to leave a reason for your down vote?" with choices (spam, didn't agree, didn't like, other). People could pick a reason or leave it alone and go on their merry little way.

Again, this is my first thoughts on it. Doesn't mean we're going to do it. Doesn't mean we're not going to test it. Doesn't mean we're not going to do it. Just means we're considering it.

Don't know if this helps clarify or not.

I think hiding downvotes is a really bad idea. The only reason I like to get feedback is to improve my experience. So, in some
cases if I am submitting my own stuff, I want to know what they didn't like so that I can maybe change it. In other cases I
would like to know just because I have seen people constantly downvote and never upvote. If anything, an overlay may not be
a bad idea as long as it is easily ignored.

Thanks again Kerry for being so helpful and responsive. One of the main reason mixx is successful is because of the team that
they have. You rock!
