Its alive! Its alive!

  The previous submission is like a month old. Fair game, I’ll submit mine since the original died then.

Anyone guilty of saying this? Go ahead. Raise your hands because we’ve all “thunk” from time to time when we find an awesome submission and after a brief search we find that its way older than a week. We’ve been trained by other sites that if its more than 24-48 hours, that the submission is DOA (Dead on Arrival) and its okay to submit your story to see if it stands up to the test of time. Well not so at Mixx.

From a personal experience as well as one from a Mixx friend, I’ve found that no time limit exists for Mixx submissions. In one case the story was 8 days old and I shared it with all my friends. I was sharing it only because I thought it was a great story, not to make it popular. In addition, I didn’t think it would become popular because it was more than a week old. You can imagine my surprise when the next day I found that submission on the Popular Page. A Mixx Friend has a similar scenario, but his was more than 3 weeks old and it too front paged. It was later confirmed by the Mixx crew that if a story never becomes popular, it still has a chance no matter how old the submission is.

So try to deprogram yourselves of the mentality that “That’s x days old, I’ll submit mine”. Instead, encourage participation by sharing that older story with your friends. When that person returns to their profile page or the popular page and sees that a story they submitted actually went somewhere, they may have enough incentive to keep participating.

This ties very closely to duplicate article submissions. It can be disheartening to other users to find that the story they submitted days before you didn’t go anywhere, but yours floated to the top. That’s enough for some people not to give Mixx another look. I would ask that we turn the dial of competition back, search first, if we find something share it instead of submitting it. Especially in the photos and video section.

Remember: KARMA DOESN’T MEAN ANYTHING, but the community means everything.

  1. I believe this happened with the original Profilactic.com submission as well. Not sure if it went popular, but about a month after submission it got a bunch of votes, and we all joined profilactic.com.

    Rob,

    Yes that was it. Joe resurrected it.

    Live damn you LIVE!!!

  4. Here, here!

    I can come up with absolutely no reason to dupe another user’s submission as long as I can simply share the original submission with the folks that follow me. Besides, just because I think something should be popular doesn’t mean it will resonate with the other users.

  5. Is this official or just a glitch? I have the impressioon that only current news get popular most of the time.

    @Tad,

    Nope this is official. Either Jay or Greg checked with the Mixx guys and they said that as long as a story hasn’t become popular before its fair game to become popular.

    Personally I like the idea. There are stories that get buried in a day or so, but are still relevant so its nice to be able to bring them back up. This may be helped also by the related stories feature.
