This special episode of Social Blend is introduced by Rob Halford (http://www.robhalford.com/) from Judas Priest (http://www.judaspriest.com/) – with thanks to Mark “Rock My Monkey” Carras (http://www.rockmymonkey.com/); and features our special guest: founder and CEO of Mixx.com, Chris McGill. This episode is split into two parts – this second part is “Episode Stripe”. The first part, “Episode Gizmo”, can be heard at http://mixxingbowl.com/2008/01/30/social-blend-051-episode-gizmo/

Presented by Greg Davies (cGt2099 from The-TrukstoP.com), Joe Fowler (SilentJay74 from JuicySnake.Blogspot.com), Brian Hill (Bdog2g2 from MixxingBowl.com), and Tamar Weinberg (Tamar from Techipedia.com), the Social Blend examines the latest news and opinions hitting the world of social media. The show’s main focus is on Mixx.com, yet focuses on other sites and contenders in the social media field.

In Episode Stripe, we discuss the recent sad news of the passing of Heath Ledger and the impact the news has had on his fellow Australians. We also get into an argument about the Digg Revolt of 2008.

Our user focus this week is on Calinazaret, and Chris McGill answers some more of YOUR questions, while we laugh at the comment of the week. As usual, we drive by The Mixx Lounge and check out what’s going on there.

  1. Great podcast guys. Thanks for the small shout out, I usually never get mentioned in a podcast. Ok I’ve never been mentioned in one. Anyways it was great to hear from Chris on the things going on inside of mixx. I love how confusing and non-professional my questions were.

  2. Speaking of voting down vs. bury…why can’t we have a reason for voting down? Spam, lame, inaccurate…etc??

  3. @astrpos

I think it’s because the down voting is not a bury tool.

  4. @Dave I know it’s different, but as the guys said the transparency of showing who down voted brings with it accountability, if the reason is stated, then I think that would eliminate a lot of potential arguments.

  5. Excellent!

Also liked the sorta shout out.

AND I’ve mentioned this before but I am completely OK with a non-edited podcast just so you know.

  6. @atropos

if the reason is stated, then I think that would eliminate a lot of potential arguments.

Not really. There have been cases were someone has submitted blatant spam and it was down voted with a comment saying this is spam. That person then responded by saying it wasn’t and went on a down vote rampage on everyone.

I think the current system is perfect. its simple. As soon as you start cluttering the work flow with reasons and stops (even optional ones), it makes the site less desirable.

People just need to grow up and understand that everything they submit is not the greatest (even if they think so).

Also though, some people use down votes in cases where legitimate news was being submitted and they just decided that instead of up voting (like the previous dozen submissions), they would throw out a down vote.

  7. When is the next episode? I miss you guys already.

    -Corey
