I’m not doing the group thing for a while.
Mixx now allows people to disable sharing now, and I’ve subscribed to unsubscribe to groups and individual shares; for now. I began to get inundated with so many emails even Gmail wasn’t helping me sift through the 200-300 emails daily. To be specific the following two options have been disabled in my account:
- “an item is added to one of my groups.”
- “Allow other users to share Mixx items with me”
I’m still notified when you add me as a friend (if choose to do so) as well as when you reply to me in a comment. In addition to removing myself from groups, I will also no longer be submitting to groups as well. I think groups were a great idea by the Mixx guys, but I think they may be used primarily as a “Help me get this to the front page” tool. I also was receiving way too many emails containing topics that I am simply not interested in: Marketing, SEO, Search, Blogging about Blogging, and the occasional Hello Kitty Darth Vader.
I still check the “YourMixx Friends” almost exclusively because it refreshes at a nice pace and its always new content (minus the occasional dupe). So feel free to add Bdog2g2 as a friend, and I’ll see what you’ve posted under my contacts.
The social aspect of Mixx is great, but I think it was a little too social for my tastes and my inbox became nothing more than a ginormous “VOTE THIS PLEASE” box.
Happy Mixxing.

I’m having this problem with sharing as well. I think I may go and turn it off for either just personal shares or just group shares. Maybe even both. I’m glad that mixx implemented this.
Hey Brian
Just wanted to correct one item you mentioned. You said “but I think they may be used primarily as a “Help me get this to the front page” tool”
When someone submits something to a group, if you choose, you get an email from Mixx telling you of that submission and with a link to go to that page. When you follow that link and vote, it doesn’t help that story get to be TopTen in Popular. A vote cast in the context of a group only helps move that content up the “front page” of that group. Nothing more.
As far as the email goes, we are releasing our digests shortly and soon after that, site mail.

Hey Kerry,
I know that when you submit an item to a group and you vote on the story from the link that is provided to you in the email it only votes on the item in the group.
What I was saying is that people submit to a group b/c of the email notification, and then group members simply click on the “Public” version and vote it up.
If you have a group of 90 members and 20% of them cast a vote to the public version, you’ve already garnered 18 votes (assuming they’re up) and well on your way to the front. I know its not a guarantee, but its a good shot.
And from my own little experiment that seems to be the case. For the last 3 days I’ve submitted to no groups and haven’t shared links and from what I’ve seen, my stories only get about a third of the votes they normally would in the past and at a much slower pace.

Hi guys -
As you may have seen in the Mixx blog post (http://blog.mixx.com/2007/12/20/we-come-bearing-gifts), one of the features we released yesterday is digest-mode email. In your account settings is now a checkbox (it’s the last one in there right now) that allows you to get all of your notifications rolled up into a single email that goes out some time in the wee hours of the night. One email per day instead of hundreds. Yay!
Of course, if you were getting 200 or 300 emails per day, your digest mail would be huge . . . I might have to do something about that.
